“Monthly Reading Bingo: A Fun and Engaging Challenge for Kids”
Looking for a fun way to get kids excited about reading? Say hello to Monthly Reading Bingo! This simple, but engaging, challenge turns reading into a game, motivating kids to explore new books, try different genres, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Whether you’re homeschooling or teaching in a classroom, this reading activity will have your students eagerly checking off squares each month!
So how does it work? Let’s dive into some creative ways to use Reading Bingo in your homeschool or classroom!
1. Set the Rules
The beauty of Reading Bingo is its flexibility! You can play in different ways, depending on what works best for your learners:
- Classic Bingo: Kids aim to complete five squares in a row.
- Challenge Mode: Go for a blackout by finishing the entire board!
2. Use It as a Fun Way to Enjoy the Seasons & Holidays
Reading Bingo isn’t just fun—it’s an educational powerhouse! Here’s how it connects to the seasons and holidays:
- Seasons – squares with challenges relating to the seasons such as “read an autumn poem” in September, “read a book set in winter” in January, or “read a book with a beach on the cover” in June.
- Holidays – squares relating to holidays such as “read a book about love” for Valentine’s Day, “read your favorite Christmas book” in December, or “read about St. Patrick” in March.
- Writing, Memorization and Recitation – Several months include challenge squares that may ask a child to “write a new ending to a story they just read”, “read a poem and recite it to the family” and so on.
Suddenly, your children are reading, learning, AND having fun!
4. Great for Kids of ALL Ages!
No matter what the age, I think most kids would enjoy seeing these options on their bingo sheet:
- “Read outside under a tree”
- “Read in a tent or blanket fort”
- “Read with a cup of hot chocolate”
Encouraging kids to change their reading environment adds excitement and novelty to the experience…and kids both young and old will enjoy it!
Another reason it can be used with a wide variety of ages:
- Younger kids can be read to in order to complete squares if they aren’t readers yet.
- Early readers can do a combo of independent reading and being read to depending on the book.
- Advanced readers can use this bingo as a way to explore a variety of genres and chapter books as well as still getting to enjoy picture books (which is often not a part of the reading for older kids…even though they still enjoy many of them!)
3. Provide a Reward at the End of the Month for Finishing!
This is completely optional, of course, but I’ve also included a printable award medal that can be cut out and glued or taped to a ribbon to create a wearable medal at the end of the month for anyone who achieved a bingo. I thought this would be really fun for this kids that are motivated by incentives.

You could even come up with your own GRAND PRIZE if a child earns the award medal all 12 months!
5. Make It a Group Activity
If all of. your children are on the younger side or you want to do it together as a class, each month’s bingo page can be used together as a family or a group…always checking them off together. How you play this bingo is completely up to you!
