My Top 5 Number Books for Young Children:

Book #1 – Goodnight Numbers, by Danica McKellar

This is my most favorite numbers book for children right now! I’m totally in love with it.

It takes kids through the numbers 1-10 by introducing a number on each two page spread. Each number is part of bedtime scene where the story is saying goodnight to different things.

Her attention to detail is what I most love. For each number, your child sees the number, number word, and tens frame cleverly hung on the wall in the room.

In addition to that, almost everything on that page is grouped into that number. For example, the number 3 page might have three toys, three pillows on the couch, three buttons on the pillow, three pictures on the wall, etc. In fact, there are so many little details, that you might find something new on your second read!

And if this isn’t amazing enough, the front and back covers host each number, the number word in FIVE languages, and the number in roman numerals, tally marks, and ten frames!

Did I say this was an amazing book yet?

Book #2 – How Big is a Million?, by Anna Milbourne and Serena Riglietti

This adorable book has become a quick favorite. It’s an Usborne book, which has always meant high quality for me, and this one is no exception. It’s thick and beautiful….and that’s just the cover!

This is the story of Pipkin the penguin as he sets out to find out how many things are in a million. He realizes how hard that is to find and his mother ends up helping him in the end.

Cue the huge poster in the back of the book. This poster literally has ONE MILLION stars on it so that your kids (and you!) can see just what that looks like. It’s such an amazing visual that takes this book over the top for me.

If you don’t have this one, I highly recommend. That poster makes it a great addition to any space unit study as well!

Book #3 – Ten Apples Up On Top, by Dr. Seuss

A classic for sure, this is a number book that we have read many times throughout the years and always read together in September on our Apple Themed day. (If you’ve never had an Apple Themed day then you should give it a try sometime!) We love themed learning in this house.

Your young kids will learn about counting to ten with three silly animal friends trying to balance apples on their head. It has great rhyme, a cute storyline, and it’s a great choice for early readers to try on their own as well!

Book #4 – The Coin Counting Book, by Rozanne Lanczak Williams

Teaching kids how to count money can be a pain, right? Finding a bunch of real or fake coins, trying to keep them all on the table or from being used as toys, never quite having exactly the right amount for the point you’re trying to make….is it just me?!

I totally understand the importance of using these manipulatives, though, especially if you have a very hands-on learner! This book, however, provides a welcome break from the mess of the coins while still providing the visuals.

From one penny to one dollar, kids learn the values and how to add them up in different combinations to make the same amount of money. The pictures are realistic and detailed, making you feel like you’re really counting money on the table in front of you.

I highly recommend this book as an early introduction to money for young children and for elementary kids still struggling with the concept of counting coins!

Book #5 – Whole-y Cow! Fractions are Fun, by Taryn Souders

Learning fractions isn’t always easy, but this little book definitely makes it more fun!

This is a cute story about a cow that decided to act differently one day. The author provides a short poem, the picture as a clue, and then asks the reader to answer questions about the fractions being shown by this cow’s silly choices.

It’s starts with halves and progresses all the way to tenths, with the ability to discuss reducing fractions for even your older children. The answers are also provided in the back for self-checking.

Whole-y Cow makes my list because, much like The Coin Counting Book, it takes a difficult concept and makes it entertaining. I love having books like these in my homeschooling toolbox!

There You Have It!

Hopefully it gives you a great starting place in finding books that will help instill a love of numbers and math in your child.
