2 Week Thematic Unit: It’s a Small World – Fun for the Whole Family!

Welcome to my first posted thematic unit and one of my all-time favorites, It’s a Small World!

You may be asking:

  • What is a thematic unit?
  • Why do you call it that instead of a unit study?

Well, a thematic unit is just a way of teaching by using a specific theme or topic!

I call this a thematic unit instead of a unit study because, to me, unit studies are heavy on academics and reach across all or most content areas. For example, we use Gather Round Homeschool unit studies as our main homeschool curriculum.

Now to answer the second question, let me give a little backstory. 🙂

For the past, almost 4 years, I’ve created and used thematic units with my kids through the summer as a fun way to keep their brains working and to provide some structure to our day. We always refer to them as our “themed weeks” because most of them only last one week (this one is the only two week I’ve done!).

My girls have learned a lot through these units but they aren’t heavy on worksheets and academics like that. They are lighter, more hands-on, and designed for fun learning! We do use them through summer break after all!

So in my brain it looks like this:

  • Unit Study – topical learning that’s heavy on academic content with multiple subjects
  • Thematic Unit – topical learning that’s lighter on academic content without activities always being focused on subjects

Now that I’ve cleared that up :), let’s get on with how it works!

How to Use this Thematic Unit

This unit is designed to cover one country each day, M-F, for two weeks. This means there are 10 countries covered! I will be listing each country and the activities we did throughout that day.

I would say this is mostly for kids in early elementary and below. You could modify it by adding in material for older kids to do with your younger kids, though.

The beauty of units such as these, is that you have complete freedom to do it in any way that works for you. You can do the countries in any order you want. You can do it exactly as we did, or pick and choose what your kids would like. You can do one country a day or stretch it out if your kids take special interest in any of them. Make it work for you!

Before beginning the unit, I printed and assembled a “Countries Around the World” booklet for them to complete as we went through each country. It didn’t take a ton of time and the girls really enjoyed finding the country in it to color each day!

18 countries?! But you said there were only 10 covered!! Yes, this book covers 18 countries, and Canada and Ireland actually aren’t even in it. (I added inserts for those two.)

I stapled all the countries into a book in the order I thought we would go through them, including the extras. I plan on doing an It’s a Small World Unit 2 another summer and we will just pull this booklet back out and finish it. 🙂 Again, though, feel free to assemble your book however you like!

I had also planned on printing out a pretend passport for them to use, but unfortunately, that’s something I just didn’t get to. You can find both of these resources, including the links to the Canada and Ireland inserts, in my It’s a Small World Pinterest Board linked at the end of this post!

There are LOTS of amazing books you could use during this unit, but the two I went to every day were:

thematic unit it's a small world

1.) The Travel Book, by Lonely Planet Kids (Has a page for every country in the world!)

2.) If You Lived Here: Houses of the World, by Giles Laroche (only read on days where that country was represented in the book)

3.) Pancakes to Parathas, by Alice B. McGinty (I didn’t have this one at the time, but I’ve since purchased it and it would be a great addition!)

A Look at Our Daily Routine During This Unit

  • Wake-up, Breakfast, Get Dressed
  • Gather together to be introduced to the country of the day and read a page in The Travel Book and If You Lived Here.
  • Watch Videos
  • Find the day’s country in the Countries Around the World book and colored it.
  • Practice saying Hello, Goodbye, Yes, No, Please, Thank you, and Excuse Me in the language of the day while having a snack.
  • Activity of the Day
  • Free-Play/Outside
  • Lunch
  • Rotating Activity Stations (I have 3 for three kids)
  • Free Play/Outside Until Dinner

That’s it! I think that’s all you need to know to get started! In the rest of this post, I’ll share with you the resources I used for each country. Hopefully this will help you save tons of time in getting started and organized!

Now without further ado……

The Jeography Songs we LOVE! (And yes, it’s spelled that way!) We were always disappointed when there wasn’t one for our country of the day! Nat Geo Kids: Are We There Yet is another of our favorites. You’ll find them all throughout this unit. 🙂

Activity of the Day

Today we made homemade focaccia together. It was fun and sooooo delicious to eat with our tagliatelle bolognese at dinner.

Rotating Activity Stations

Learning/Activity Stations are something I use with my girls a lot. I use it in our homeschool and I often utilize them in the thematic units we do during the summer. I love that it gives each of them time to work on an activity individually. I can walk around and help them as they need it, or create two independent stations and one that I’m going to be working with them at. I usually make each rotation 15-30 minutes long, depending on the activities of the day.

If this isn’t for you, that’s fine! You could make any of these things whole group or just skip them altogether.

The learning stations today were:

  1. Coloring Pages
  2. Pizza Dramatic Play
    • We have a play kitchen with a wooden pizza and toppings so we set up a little “pizza shop”. I printed out pizza order forms to use and I was their customer. We even got out some play money to practice money counting. They really enjoyed making their momma some pizza. 🙂 If you don’t have this, though, you could always do a “make a pizza craft”.
  3. Learning Apps on the iPad

Activity of the Day

Today’s activity was making chocolate croissants FROM SCRATCH! I know, I know, this seems crazy…but I’ve wanted to try it for a looooong time, so this seemed like a great reason!

You do actually need to make the dough the night before so it can proof in the fridge overnight. And it does take a good half of the day (laminating the dough). But it was SO worth it. They are better than anything you’ll ever buy at the store. Trust me on this.

My girls got really into it, too, and looked forward to pulling the dough out of the fridge to fold and roll out every 30 minutes and helped me roll them up when it was time.

We also had a fashion show! This may not appeal to all families, but I have three girls that like to dress up. 🙂 They got to create any outfit they wanted. Picked out accessories. Told me how they wanted their hair. I did they’re make-up and then I “announced” them coming down the stairs. They pretty much thought this was the most fun ever.

Activity of the Day

Today we made a first day of school cone called a schultuete. It is custom in Germany for kids to receive a cone full of goodies, often from the grandparents, on their first day of school each year. The size and designs of these cones vary greatly from simple to very extravagant! I would kind of compare it to how we do Easter baskets here.

We stuck with something simple! All we really needed was poster board, scissors, markers, and glue/sticky dots. TIP: Use sharpies! I know it can be hard to hand your little one a permanent marker, but I tried washable with my three year old and it would rub off on her hands, even hours after it was finished. My older two used sharpies and it was no problem!

This was a fun activity where the kids could use their creativity. We even kept them until our first day of homeschool this year! I filled them with snacks, a couple treats, and some school supplies, then left them on the school table for the girls to find on their first day that morning. It was the highlight of their day! Since we have some German heritage, I think we are going to make this a new tradition. 🙂

  3. German Autobahn Racing
    • I used painters tape to create roads all throughout our playroom and they could use all of our toy cars to race around it. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a good picture of this, but it was liked enough that we left the tape on the floor for almost a week before we took it up!

Activities of the Day

We had a couple of special activities today!

The first was a special Netherlands related snack. I found a couple of different Dutch cheeses for a cheese tasting and we had Stroopwafel the traditional way served sitting atop a steaming hot cup of coffee (or hot chocolate!).

Our craft was a q-tip painting of a tulip field. I had never done this before, but you guys, it was one of the easiest painting activities I’ve done. I bought a pack of small square canvases and then just used some of the washable kids paint that I already had. To prep, I just squeezed out the colors they each would need into plastic crates I already had (paper plates would work fine, too), put a pile of q-tips beside it, and then demonstrated how to dot the paint on to look like abstract tulips. I gave them a paint brush for the grass and sky but you could definitely use the q-tips for all of it.

They did better than I anticipated! The clean up was quick and easy and their canvases are still displayed in their bedrooms to this day. 🙂

Activity of the Day

We discussed the origins of the Olympics today and the girls each made their own torch and olive branch crown. Did you know that during the original Olympic Games, there were no medals awarded to the winner? Their prize was the crown of olive branches!

So after they had finished their crafts, they took their torches outside and we had a little mini-Olympics. Daddy held onto the crowns and it was his job to crown the winner of each event.

We had a foot race, a long-jump, and because my 8 and 5 year olds had each won an event at that point, I made up some silly event that my 3 year old could win so she could get her crown. 🙂 You could make this as amazing or as simple as you like. Ours was VERY simple and the kids still had a great time….in fact, they wanted me to make up more events!

Activity of the Day

After talking about the maple leaf on the Canadian flag, we went on a nature walk through our neighborhood to gather different leaves for leaf rubbings.

The actual leaf rubbings were harder for my kids then I expected them to be. It was difficult for them to color with the right pressure to make it show up well. Just a heads up if you have really littles! Because of this, it wasn’t their favorite activity…but they loved gathering the leaves. 🙂

Activity of the Day

Our activity today was learning how to count to 10 in Mandarin! I used the chinese number printouts from Kids Craft Room and then, instead of coloring them in, had them put stickers over the lines.

Once they were done putting the stickers on, we learned the name of each number, put them in order, and said them together out loud every time we added on a new number. It was actually quite effective!

There you have it! My two week It’s a Small World Thematic Unit.

Out of all the thematic units we’ve done through the summers, this is one of our favorites! There’s crafts, music, TONS of delicious food, and more. Even though it’s not focused heavily on academics specifically, my kids still remember facts about these countries months later!

Remember that I created this post to help you! You can use it exactly the way we did it, or use it as a guide and take out or add in whatever you need.

Below is the It’s a Small World Pinterest Board that I promised you way back at the beginning. I didn’t forget!

If you enjoyed this thematic unit and would like to know more about the unit study curriculum we use for our homeschool, you can read more about that here. 🙂

Thanks for checking out my It’s a Small World Thematic Unit! If you get a chance to use it, drop me a comment below and let me know if you enjoyed it and what you may have changed up for your family!
