5 Ways I Hope to Help Homeschooling Parents

Welcome to The Lead Learner Mom!

My name is Tricia. I’m a wife. A mom of three kiddos ages 8, 5, and 3. A former teacher, turned stay-at-home mom, turned homeschooling momma. I’ve used and experienced many different educational institutions and homeschooling is by far my favorite…so much so that I want to share my experiences with you!

5 Ways I Hope to Help Homeschooling Parents:

#1 – Help You Embrace the Role of Lead Learner

Being a homeschooling parent can be more rewarding than we think! Not only do we get to watch our children learn and grow and experience more freedom to live life to the fullest, but we also have the opportunity to learn right along side them!

I started creating my own “themed weeks”, as we called them, three summer ago as a way to add some structured fun in the summer for my three young daughters. They were so fun for my girls and they still look forward to them!

What I discovered through this, though, was that I was learning new things too! I was more than their mom and teacher…I was their lead learner!

#2 – Provide You with Knowledge of Unit Studies

Since beginning those “themed weeks” three years ago, I discovered that this is how I desired to teach my children.

I was ecstatic when I realized what I was actually doing was creating Unit Studies and that this was a real method of homeschooling! After realizing that, I knew that Unit Study was my passion and I ended up choosing a Unit Study based curriculum for homeschool.

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, Unit Studies are simply lessons that teach several different subject areas within a chosen topic. They often make homeschooling multiple kids easier because of the act of teaching them together and can really help create a family unit as well, instead of everyone doing their work separately!

Some examples of topics are Oceans, Space, Countries around the World, Insects, Birds, Presidents, Plants….the choices are endless! All or most subjects would be taught through the lens of one topic for a few weeks.

In the case of my original “themed weeks”, they included less academic topics sometimes as Princesses, Disney Movies, Board Games, Carnivals and so on. These weeks were always full of learning, but less focused on actual academic content….used in the summer usually.

#3 – Help You Understand Curriculum Options

Choosing curriculum can be one of the most daunting tasks for homeschooling parents….especially new ones! I want to show you what options you have and review the ones we have experience with in hopes to help you with your decisions!

#4 – Provide You with Fun and Creative Themed Units

My goal is to share the content of my “themed weeks” so that you can take those ideas and run with them. These would provide themes, book lists, video lists, movie/show options, crafts, worksheets, recipes, links, etc….everything you would need in one place!

By doing this, I want you to be able to plan fun and memorable learning opportunities with your kids without it taking so much time to plan it from scratch.

Whether for use during homeschooling or more for fun structured activities through the summer, hopefully these plans will take the guess work and research out of the equation so that it you can be ready to go with a theme in very little time!

#5 – Encourage You to Enjoy the Time You Have with Your Kids

Finally, I hope that this blog will show you how you can learn alongside your kids, be it through homeschooling or on school breaks, and enjoy the time you have together.

Our kids are only young once, and even though a lot of times it’s hard to remember that, I know it’s important that we do!

Homeschooling and parenting can often become repetitive, overwhelming, and exhausting! I think we all feel that! However, when we begin to start learning alongside our kids, it helps alleviate some of that and even makes learning….dare I say, FUN!
